How to Spray Paint your Garage Doors
Spray painting garage doors
This is a great way to refresh their appearance and improve curb appeal. Below is our step-by-step guide to doing it properly.
-
Pre - Clean
Clean the surface thoroughly. Use a pressure washer or hose and scrub the garage door with a mild detergent to remove dirt, mildew, and grease. Let it dry completely. Moisture can ruin paint adhesion.
-
Sanding
Sand the surface. Lightly sand to remove peeling paint and to scuff up glossy areas so paint adheres better.
-
Filling (Repairs)
Repair damages. Patch holes or cracks with Spray filler and sand smooth once dry. We have a very effective product Motip Spray filler that works great on all substrates.
-
Masking
Use masking tape and masking paper to mask off trim, handles, and areas around the garage door.
Lay drop cloths or plastic sheeting to protect the driveway, siding, and nearby surfaces from overspray. -
Priming
Use a spray primer that suits the material of your garage door (metal, wood, Upvc or Composite).
Apply 1 -2 coats in thin, even layers. Allow 10 -15 Minutes to dry between coats. -
Spraying Top Coat
Choose the spray paint designed for the surface.
Hold the spray can or sprayer 8–12 inches away and apply in steady, overlapping horizontal passes.
Do 2–3 light coats rather than one thick coat to avoid drips.
Let each coat dry thoroughly between applications. Approx. 10-15 Minutes between coats
