Delta E (ΔE) is the industry-standard method for measuring colour accuracy. Developed by the Commission Internationale de l’Éclairage (International Commission on Illumination), it quantifies the difference between two colours using the CIELAB colour space.

Delta E measures how closely a reproduced colour matches the original colour standard, comparing the displayed result against the intended reference colour.

The Delta E scale ranges from 0 to 100. Within the CIELAB system, the higher the Delta E value, the greater the deviation from the true colour. A value of 0 represents a perfect match, while higher values indicate increasing levels of mismatch—up to 100, which represents colours at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Lower Delta E values indicate higher accuracy:

  • ΔE 1.0–2.5: Very small differences, typically imperceptible to the human eye

  • ΔE 3.0–6.0: Generally accepted as commercially acceptable colour reproduction

At Tameside Paints & Supplies Ltd, we operate to a far higher standard.
All of our colour matches are produced within ΔE 0.4—a difference so precise it is completely undetectable to the human eye, ensuring exceptional colour consistency and professional-grade accuracy every time.
