Spray Painting your Metal Gates and Railings.
Spray painting metal gates and railings can restore their appearance and protect them from rust. Follow this step-by-step guide to get professional-looking results with aerosol spray paint.
-
Step 1: Surface Preparation
Remove Rust and Old Paint
Use a wire brush or sanding pad to scrub away rust, loose paint, or flaky coating.
Focus on edges and welds where rust often begins.
Wash down the surface using a degreaser to remove oils, dirt, and dust.
Rinse with clean water and allow to fully dry. -
Step 2: Protect Surrounding Areas
Use masking tape to cover hinges, latches, or parts that shouldn’t be painted.
Lay dust sheets to protect ground and nearby surfaces from overspray. -
Step 3: Apply Primer
Use an aerosol anti-corrosion metal primer suited for outdoor use. Shake the can well (usually 1–2 minutes).
Hold 20–30 cm from the surface and apply in light, even coats.
Allow each coat to dry 15 -20 Minutes between coats.Tip: Two light coats are better than one heavy coat to avoid drips.
-
Step 4: Spray the Topcoat
Shake the topcoat can thoroughly.
Do a test spray on cardboard to ensure even flow. Apply in thin layers
Hold the can 20–30 cm from the surface.
Spray in a steady back-and-forth motion, overlapping slightly with each pass.
Apply 2–3 light coats for best coverage. -
Step 5: Optional: Apply Clear Lacquer
For added protection and sheen, finish with a clear lacquer spray.
Apply as you would a topcoat—light, even layers with good drying time. -
Step 6: Final Checks and Cleanup
Carefully remove masking tape before the paint fully hardens.
Check for any missed spots and touch up if needed.
Clean up and store remaining spray cans upright in a dry place.
