A gate can make a smart entrance look tired long before the rest of the property needs attention. Flaking paint, orange rust marks and dull railings are more than cosmetic problems: once moisture reaches bare metal, corrosion can spread beneath the coating. This guide to repainting metal gates focuses on the work that determines whether your new finish lasts for years or starts peeling after one wet winter.

Start by assessing the gate, not choosing a colour

Metal gates are not all the same. A traditional wrought-iron gate, a mild-steel side gate, galvanised steel panels and a powder-coated driveway gate can all need different preparation and coating systems. The right paint is only as good as its adhesion to the surface beneath it.

Check the gate closely before ordering paint. Look for loose or bubbling old coating, rust around welds and joints, dents, grease from hinges, and areas where climbing plants or wet leaves have held moisture against the metal. Pay particular attention to the bottom rail and posts, where water sits for longer.

If the existing finish is sound, firmly attached and merely faded, you may only need a thorough clean, a light abrasion and a compatible topcoat. If paint lifts easily, rust is visible, or the surface is cracking, the gate needs more extensive stripping back. Painting over unstable material is a false economy - the new coat will fail with it.

It is also worth identifying whether the gate is galvanised. Fresh galvanised metal has a smooth, zinc-rich surface that can reject ordinary paint unless it is cleaned and primed correctly. Older galvanised gates may be easier to coat once weathered, but they still need a primer designed for the substrate.

Choose a dry window for repainting metal gates

Exterior metalwork should be painted in dry, settled conditions. Avoid rain, fog, heavy dew, strong wind and very cold days. A surface can look dry while still carrying moisture from overnight condensation, particularly on shaded gates. Paint applied over damp metal may trap water and lead to blistering or rust beneath the finish.

Warm, overcast weather is usually easier to work in than direct blazing sun. In intense sunlight, aerosol paint can dry too quickly, making it harder to maintain an even wet edge. Wind creates another problem: it blows overspray onto cars, windows, paving and nearby planting, while dust can settle into fresh paint.

Open the gate fully if practical and protect the surrounding area with suitable masking materials. Cover locks, hinges, latches and any areas that must remain paint-free. Do not paint moving hinge surfaces heavily, as built-up coating can cause sticking and premature wear.

Preparation is where a durable finish begins

Good preparation is the difference between a gate that looks freshly finished and one that merely looks covered. Start by washing away dirt, algae, traffic film and loose debris with a suitable cleaner. Rinse if required by the cleaning product, then allow the gate to dry completely.

Next, remove anything that is loose, flaky or corroded. A wire brush is useful around decorative scrollwork, welds and tight corners. Use abrasive paper or a sanding pad to feather the edges of remaining sound paint, so there is no sharp ridge between bare metal and the old coating. For broad, flat sections, a mechanical sander can save time, but take care not to damage thin metal or decorative detailing.

Rust must be dealt with honestly. Surface rust can usually be removed back to clean, bright metal by brushing and sanding. Deep pitting may need more attention, especially if the metal has weakened. If corrosion has eaten through sections of the gate, repainting will not restore its strength. Repair or replacement should come first.

Once sanding is complete, remove all dust. Then wipe the surface with a suitable degreaser or panel wipe, using clean lint-free cloths. This step matters more than many DIY painters realise. Fingerprints, oil, wax, polish and airborne grime can all interfere with adhesion, even on a gate that appears clean.

Wear gloves while cleaning and painting. They protect your hands and stop skin oils transferring back onto prepared metal.

Use the correct primer for the metal and condition

Primer is not always needed over an intact, compatible painted surface, but it is essential over bare steel and any properly prepared rust-affected areas. It gives the topcoat a stable surface to grip and helps protect vulnerable metal from moisture.

For bare ferrous metal such as iron and steel, choose an anti-corrosion metal primer. Apply it to all exposed areas, including edges, welds, corners and the underside of rails. These are the first places water finds and the first places a coating system usually fails.

For galvanised steel, use a primer formulated to adhere to galvanised surfaces. Do not assume a general-purpose metal primer will bond reliably. If you are repainting a previously powder-coated gate, test a discreet area first after cleaning and abrading it. Some coatings need a specialist adhesion-promoting primer, particularly where the existing finish is glossy or difficult to key.

Aerosol primers are especially useful on ornate gates because they reach into bars, scrolls and awkward welded details without the brush marks that can collect in corners. Apply several light passes rather than trying to achieve full coverage in one heavy coat. Allow the stated drying time before applying colour.

Pick a finish that suits the gate’s job

Black remains a popular choice for traditional metal gates, but it is far from the only option. Anthracite grey can complement modern windows and doors, while a carefully matched RAL, British Standard or bespoke colour can tie a gate into the wider exterior scheme. If you are refreshing only one gate in a run, colour matching matters - a near match often looks more obvious than a deliberate contrast.

Finish level changes the result as much as colour. Gloss gives a smart, traditional look and is easier to wipe clean, but it highlights dents, uneven repairs and poor preparation. Satin offers a softer, contemporary appearance while still providing a practical finish. Matt can suit certain architectural styles, although it can show marks more readily and may be less forgiving around high-contact areas.

For a gate exposed to regular rain, road grime or coastal air, prioritise a durable exterior coating system over a decorative paint chosen purely by colour. The best option depends on the base metal, the existing finish and how much weather the gate receives.

How to spray paint a metal gate evenly

Before spraying the gate itself, shake the aerosol thoroughly for the time stated on the can and test the spray pattern on card. This confirms the nozzle is clear and lets you judge the distance and speed needed for an even coat.

Hold the can at the recommended distance, usually roughly 20 to 30 cm from the surface, subject to the product instructions. Begin moving before pressing the nozzle, spray across the section in a controlled pass, then release after passing the edge. This prevents heavy paint deposits at the beginning and end of each stroke.

Work in manageable sections. On vertical bars, start with the edges and awkward recesses, then coat the broader front-facing surfaces. Keep each pass overlapping the previous one by around half. The aim is a light, even film, not instant opacity.

Two or three light coats generally produce a more professional result than one heavy coat. Heavy application causes runs, sagging and solvent trapping, particularly around decorative ironwork. Let each coat flash off as instructed before adding the next. If a run does happen, resist the urge to brush it while wet. Let it dry fully, flatten it carefully and recoat.

Keep the aerosol moving, and rotate or reposition yourself rather than twisting your wrist around the bars. This helps maintain a consistent distance from the gate. For the reverse side, wait until the first side has cured sufficiently to handle without marking, then repeat the preparation checks and spraying process.

Do not rush curing or refitting

Paint can feel dry to the touch long before it has reached useful hardness. Keep the gate open where possible until the coating has dried enough that contact points will not stick. Avoid closing it against posts, catches or rubber buffers too soon, as these can imprint the new finish.

Treat the gate gently for the first few days. Do not wash it, attach decorations, or allow hedge-cutting debris and wet foliage to sit against it while the coating continues to cure. A correctly applied paint system needs time to develop its full resistance to knocks, moisture and everyday use.

For ongoing maintenance, wash the gate occasionally, clear leaves from the bottom rail and deal with chips promptly. A small scratch that is cleaned, primed and touched in early is straightforward. Left exposed through a British winter, it can become a larger rust repair.

A well-prepared repaint does more than change the colour of a gate. It protects the metal, sharpens the property’s first impression and delays more expensive repair work.
