Paint Spluttering

Spluttering usually means the coating is not atomising consistently. Temperature, shaking, nozzle condition, spray technique and can pressure can all contribute.

Check the product and temperature

Confirm that the aerosol is suitable for the job and is within the product’s recommended application temperature range.

Shake the aerosol thoroughly

Shake vigorously for the time specified by the manufacturer. Continue shaking periodically during a long spraying session.

Inspect the spray actuator

Look for dried coating, damage or a loose actuator. Replace a removable actuator where the product instructions allow it.

Test your spray distance

Hold the can at the distance specified by the product. Too close can overload the surface; too far can cause dry spray and uneven deposition.

Use controlled overlapping passes

Move the can smoothly and keep the spray motion consistent. Avoid stopping directly over the panel.

Allow the can to recover

During prolonged use, pressure and temperature can change. Follow the product instructions and allow the can to stabilise where required.

Check the substrate and previous coat

A contaminated, wet or incompatible substrate can make a normal spray appear defective by causing uneven wetting or rapid rejection.
