Good aerosol technique creates even coverage, controlled film build and a smoother finish. Follow the product instructions, maintain a consistent distance and speed, and build the coating with light, controlled passes rather than one heavy coat.
Control the spray, control the finish
An aerosol can deliver a professional-looking finish when the spray pattern, distance, speed and overlap are kept consistent. Poor technique can leave runs, dry spray, striping, rough texture, missed edges or excessive film build.
The correct method still depends on the individual product. Shake for the stated time, use the specified application conditions and spray distance, observe every flash-off period and allow the coating to dry and cure before handling or recoating.

Step-by-step
Maintain a constant distance and speed, use smooth overlapping passes and allow every coat the specified flash-off time.
Confirm that the surface and any primer are dry, compatible and ready for coating. Support the item securely, mask surrounding areas and remove dust immediately before spraying.
Set up the ventilation and PPE required by the label and Safety Data Sheet, keep non-essential people away and remove flames, sparks and other ignition sources.
Bring the aerosol and workpiece into the application-temperature range stated on the label. Never force-warm or expose an aerosol can to excessive heat.
Shake for the complete specified time after the mixing ball becomes audible, and re-shake periodically during use so pigments and resins remain evenly mixed.
Spray onto a clean card or scrap panel before coating the project. Check that the nozzle produces a clean, even pattern and that the colour, gloss and compatibility are acceptable.
If the can spits, splutters or sprays unevenly, stop and follow the product instructions for checking the nozzle and aerosol condition.
Hold the can perpendicular to the surface at the distance stated on the label. Move your whole arm parallel to the work rather than swinging your wrist in an arc.
Begin moving before pressing the nozzle, start the spray just beyond the edge and release only after the pass has travelled beyond the opposite edge.
Apply a light first coat where the product system calls for one. Keep the can moving and avoid trying to achieve complete hiding immediately.
On complex items, lightly coat edges, profiles and recesses before broad faces, taking care not to flood corners or create heavy local build-up.
Use smooth parallel passes at a constant speed and distance. Overlap adjacent passes evenly so the coating joins without stripes, gaps or repeatedly soaking the same area.
Rotate or reposition the workpiece where practical instead of twisting the can at an extreme angle. Apply only the number and type of coats specified for the product.
Allow every coat the full flash-off time stated on the label. Inspect in good light for dry spray, heavy areas, striping, runs or missed edges before continuing.
Correct your distance or speed on the next pass rather than touching, wiping or immediately respraying the wet coating. Re-shake the can as instructed.
After the final coat, follow the exact nozzle-cleaning instructions on the can. Some products instruct you to invert and purge the nozzle, while others require the tip to be wiped or removed and cleaned.
Allow the coating to dry and cure fully before handling, polishing or reassembly. Activated 2K aerosols have a limited usable life and specific disposal instructions after activation.

Use the exact distance stated on the product label or Technical Data Sheet because nozzle and coating designs vary. The important point is to keep that distance constant across the entire pass. A test card will show whether the fan is clean and the film is landing evenly.
Overlap enough for adjacent passes to merge into a uniform film without leaving stripes or repeatedly soaking the same area. The correct amount depends on the nozzle pattern, distance and product, so establish it on a test panel rather than relying on one universal percentage.
There is no universal coat count. Colour, opacity, product type, substrate and intended film build all matter. Apply the light or medium coats, flash-off periods and total coat number stated on the label or Technical Data Sheet.
The coating may be reaching the surface too dry because the can is too far away, the pass is too fast, the product or surface is outside the stated temperature range, or wind and airflow are affecting the spray. Stop, review the instructions and test your adjusted technique before continuing.
Only when the product instructions tell you to do so. Some aerosols are cleared by inverting and briefly spraying, while others require the nozzle to be wiped or removed. Activated 2K aerosols can have different end-of-use and disposal procedures, so always follow the specific can.
