Blocked Nozzle

A blocked nozzle is one of the most common aerosol problems and is often caused by dried coating left in or around the actuator after use.

Quick answer

Start with the safest checks: stop spraying, remove the actuator only if the product allows it, inspect the spray opening and replace the actuator if appropriate. Never pierce the valve.

What to do

Stop spraying and move to a safe area

If the aerosol is behaving unexpectedly, stop using it and move the can away from people, heat and ignition sources before inspecting it.

Check the actuator

Look for dried paint around the spray opening, a loose actuator or visible damage. Do not force the actuator if it does not remove as intended.

Replace the actuator where appropriate

If the product uses a removable actuator and a suitable replacement is available, fit it securely and test the can according to the label.

Test the spray pattern

Carry out a short test spray on a suitable test surface. A clean, even fan or jet indicates that the actuator is functioning correctly.

Do not pierce the valve

Never use a pin, needle or drill to clear the valve. This can damage the can and create an unsafe release of pressurised product.

Clean the exterior after use

Wipe dried residue from the outside of the actuator after use and follow the product instructions for clearing the nozzle.

Store the aerosol correctly

Store the can as stated on the label, protected from excessive heat, frost and direct sunlight.

Can I remove an aerosol nozzle?
Some aerosols use removable actuators and some do not. Only remove it if the product design and instructions allow it.
Why does the nozzle block after spraying?
Residual coating can dry around the spray opening when the nozzle is not cleared or cleaned as instructed after use.
Can I wash a nozzle in solvent?
Only where the product instructions specifically permit it. Do not assume a solvent is compatible with every actuator material.
