Preparation & Spraying
Primer creates a stable foundation for the colour coat, improves adhesion and can provide corrosion protection, filling or sealing properties. The correct product and application method are essential because there is no universal primer for every surface.
The right foundation for every finish
Primer is more than a grey undercoat. Depending on the product, it can promote adhesion to aluminium or plastic, protect bare steel, seal porous wood and MDF, isolate a repair or build enough film to level sanding marks before the colour coat.
The wrong primer can create weak adhesion, shrinkage, lifting or early corrosion. Select the primer by substrate and purpose, confirm that it is compatible with every layer in the system and apply only the amount specified by the manufacturer.

Use clean preparation materials and the exact primer specified for the substrate and topcoat system.
Etch, anti-corrosive, high-build, plastic, epoxy or primer-sealer as required.
A compatible cleaner and fresh lint-free cloths for the final clean.
Suitable abrasive paper, sanding sponges or scuff pads for preparation and refinement.
Quality masking tape, paper and protective film for surrounding areas.
Dust-removal materials and a clean card for checking the spray pattern.
Gloves, eye protection and suitable respiratory protection for the primer used.
Step-by-step
Build the primer in controlled coats, allow the correct flash-off time and do not topcoat until the product instructions allow it.
Confirm whether the surface is steel, aluminium, galvanised metal, plastic, uPVC, wood, MDF, filler or an existing coating. Decide whether the primer is needed for adhesion, corrosion protection, filling, sealing or isolation.
Choose a primer approved for both the substrate and the colour coat that will follow.
Remove rust, loose coating and failed repairs. Fill and level damage with compatible products, then feather every transition into the sound surrounding finish.
Primer is not a substitute for rust removal, repair work or correct surface preparation.
Refine the surface to the abrasive grade specified for the primer. Remove all sanding dust, degrease with clean lint-free cloths and allow the cleaner to evaporate fully.
Mask surrounding areas carefully and avoid touching the final cleaned surface with bare hands.
Bring the aerosol and workpiece into the temperature range stated on the label. Shake the can for the full specified time so the pigments and resins are thoroughly mixed.
Test the spray pattern on a clean card. Replace a damaged or blocked nozzle before coating the project.
Hold the aerosol at the distance stated on the product label and keep it perpendicular to the surface. Start the spray just before the panel edge, move at a steady speed and release after passing the opposite edge.
Use a light first coat where the system calls for it rather than trying to hide the substrate in one pass.
Apply further light or medium coats using smooth, overlapping passes. Keep the can moving and give edges, profiles and recesses enough coverage without flooding them.
Follow the stated coat count and film build. Excess primer can run, trap solvent and shrink later.
Allow the exact flash-off time between coats and the specified drying period before sanding or topcoating. Temperature, ventilation, coat thickness and product type all affect the result.
Activated 2K aerosols have a limited usable life after activation, so follow the label and dispose of them correctly.
Check the dry primer for pinholes, dry spray, runs, missed areas and visible repair edges. Sand the primer only when the Technical Data Sheet requires it, then remove dust and clean again.
Apply the colour coat within the approved recoat window. If that window is missed, re-key the primer as instructed before proceeding.
Primer selection
Useful answers
Not always. A sound, compatible existing coating may sometimes be cleaned, keyed and topcoated directly. Bare substrate, repairs, exposed filler and surfaces needing additional adhesion, corrosion protection or sealing normally require the correct primer. Check the topcoat Technical Data Sheet.
Use the number and type of coats stated on the product label or Technical Data Sheet. Adhesion promoters and etch primers are normally applied as thin films, while high-build primers are designed to create more film for sanding. More primer is not automatically better.
It depends on the primer. Some systems are designed for wet-on-wet topcoating within a stated window, while sanding primers and high-build primers normally need refinement after drying. Follow the individual product instructions and remove all dust before colour.
Do not assume so. Etch primer is generally intended as a thin adhesion coat on approved bare metal, and some formulations should not be applied over filler or certain coatings. Apply it only to the substrates and layers listed by the manufacturer.
There is no universal time. The correct interval depends on the primer, coat thickness, temperature, airflow and whether the system is wet-on-wet or sandable. Use the Technical Data Sheet, stay within the recoat window and re-key the primer if that window is exceeded.
Allow the primer to flash off and dry as specified, inspect the finish carefully and sand or re-clean it where the product instructions require before applying colour.
