Control the hazard before relying on PPE
Spraying turns paint into a fine airborne mist and can create much higher exposure than brushing or rolling. Depending on the product, the hazards may include solvent vapour, particles, skin and eye contact, fire, explosion and respiratory sensitisation.
PPE is the final layer of protection, not a replacement for a safer product, effective extraction, segregation or good working methods. Always use the product label and Safety Data Sheet to select controls, because a dust-producing preparation task, a solvent-based 1K aerosol and an isocyanate-containing 2K coating require very different protection.
Tasks and hazards
Preparation, cleaning, spraying, curing and disposal can create different hazards. Assess every stage rather than considering the spraying step alone.
Dust from old coatings, filler, rust, wood, metal and plastic may require extraction, suitable particulate RPE, eye protection and clothing.

Step-by-step
Use this sequence as a general planning guide. The label, Safety Data Sheet and workplace risk assessment take priority for the specific product and task.
Confirm the exact aerosol product and read the label and Safety Data Sheet before opening or activating it. Identify the hazard pictograms, ventilation needs, required RPE and PPE, first-aid measures, storage instructions and disposal precautions.
Do not assume that two aerosols with similar colours or finishes have the same chemistry or control requirements.
Consider the amount of product, duration, surface area, location and people who could be exposed. Where practical, reduce the quantity sprayed, use a lower-hazard product or choose a method that creates less airborne mist.
PPE is not the first control. Use it alongside substitution, segregation, extraction, good technique and suitable work planning.
Use the spray area, booth, room or local extraction specified for the product and task. Make sure contaminated air is discharged safely and keep doors, escape routes and extraction in the required operating condition.
Keep children, pets, customers and unprotected workers away until the mist and vapour have cleared.
Keep the work away from smoking, flames, pilot lights, heaters, hot surfaces, sparks and electrical equipment that is not suitable for the atmosphere. Do not improvise with domestic fans or heaters around flammable vapour.
Know how to stop the work, leave the area and obtain first aid or emergency help if a spill, fire, exposure or equipment failure occurs.
Match the RPE to the contaminant and concentration. Particulate filters do not protect against solvent vapour, and a gas or vapour filter is not automatically suitable for every solvent or spraying task.
For spraying isocyanate-containing 2K coatings, filtering respirators are not suitable. Use the required air-fed breathing apparatus and controlled spray facilities.
Inspect the respirator, filters, airflow, gloves, eye protection and clothing before use. Tight-fitting RPE must be face-fit tested for the individual wearer, seal to clean-shaven skin and be fit-checked every time it is worn.
Make sure goggles, hoods and other PPE do not interfere with the respirator seal or reduce visibility and control.
Start extraction or ventilation before spraying and keep it operating for the required clearance period afterwards. Use controlled technique to limit overspray and bounce-back, and never spray towards another person.
Keep the required RPE in place until you have left the contaminated area or the area has cleared. Do not lift a visor to inspect the finish while mist remains.
Allow the area to clear before removing protection. Take off contaminated PPE without transferring paint to the skin, wash exposed skin, clean reusable equipment and store RPE so it cannot be contaminated or damaged.
Keep aerosol cans cool, upright and away from heat and ignition. Do not puncture or burn them, and dispose of cans, filters, wipes and contaminated clothing as directed by the label and local waste arrangements.

No. FFP3 is a particulate protection level and does not protect against solvent vapours. The correct RPE depends on the product, concentration and task. Follow the Safety Data Sheet and risk assessment, and never use a filtering respirator for spraying isocyanate-containing paint.
Outdoor air movement can dilute vapour, but it can also carry spray mist and overspray towards other people, vehicles or property. Outside is not automatically safe and does not replace product-specific RPE, segregation and control measures. Follow the label and consider wind speed and direction.
When tight-fitting RPE is required at work, it must be suitable for the individual wearer and face-fit tested. The wearer must also be clean-shaven where the mask seals and perform a fit check each time the respirator is put on.
Isocyanate-containing 2K spray products should not be treated as ordinary DIY aerosols. Spraying requires trained users, suitable controlled spray facilities, air-fed breathing apparatus and the additional controls stated in the Safety Data Sheet and workplace procedures.
Keep cans upright, cool and away from heat, sunlight and ignition sources. Do not puncture or burn them. Follow the label and local waste guidance for partly full cans, used filters, contaminated wipes, gloves and disposable coveralls.
