A garage door can make the whole front of a property look tired long before anything is actually wrong with it. Faded colour, chalky patches, rust spots and old brush marks all stand out. This guide to repainting garage doors is built for getting a cleaner, longer-lasting finish without turning a straightforward job into a weekend of trial and error.

The part that catches most people out is not the colour. It is the surface. Garage doors come in painted steel, galvanised metal, aluminium, GRP, UPVC and composite-style finishes, and each one responds differently to primer, topcoat and prep. If you get the substrate right from the start, the rest of the job becomes far more predictable.

Why garage doors fail before the paint tin is empty

Most repaint jobs go wrong for one of three reasons. The first is poor adhesion because the old surface was glossy, contaminated or unstable. The second is using a generic paint on a specialist surface such as UPVC or powder-coated metal. The third is application - too heavy a coat, poor temperature, or not enough flash-off time between passes.

Garage doors take more punishment than many people expect. They face UV, rain, road grime, hand contact around handles and repeated flexing or vibration during opening and closing. A finish that looks acceptable on an indoor cabinet may not last on an exterior door. That is why a surface-specific coating matters.

Before you buy paint, work out exactly what you are spraying. If you are unsure, check the manufacturer details or test a hidden patch carefully.

Metal garage doors

Steel and aluminium doors are common, especially on older up-and-over and roller designs. These often have factory finishes that become dull over time. If the existing coating is sound, you usually do not need to strip everything back. The goal is to clean, de-gloss and key the surface so the new coating can grip properly.

If you find rust on steel, that changes the job slightly. Any loose corrosion has to be removed fully. Painting over active rust might improve the look for a few weeks, but it will keep travelling under the new film.

Galvanised or powder-coated doors

These are trickier than basic painted steel because the surface can be less receptive to standard paint. Fresh galvanised surfaces in particular can reject the wrong coating. Powder-coated finishes can also be very smooth, which means prep becomes even more important. In these cases, using the correct adhesion-promoting primer is what separates a proper result from peeling edges later.

UPVC and composite-style garage doors

These need a formula designed for plastics or low-energy surfaces. Standard masonry, wood or metal paints are not the answer here. Many repaint failures on white plastic-style doors come down to the wrong product choice rather than poor technique. If the colour change is significant - for example, white to anthracite - build coverage steadily instead of trying to force it in one or two heavy coats.

What you need before you start

A good garage door repaint is mostly prep and control. The essentials are cleaner or degreaser, abrasive pads or fine wet and dry paper, masking materials, a suitable primer where needed, and a topcoat matched to the substrate. If you are using aerosols, having enough cans for the full job matters. Running short halfway through is where sheen differences and patch repairs begin.

It also helps to plan around the weather. Dry conditions, moderate temperature and minimal wind are ideal. Cold panels can slow curing. Hot surfaces in direct sun can make paint flash off too quickly, which affects flow and finish. Outside in the UK, a calm mild day is usually your best window.

Preparation matters more than the final coat

Start with a proper wash. Garage doors collect traffic film, polish residue, algae, waxes and general airborne grime. If you paint over that, the coating bonds to contamination instead of the door. Use a suitable cleaner, rinse if required, and allow the surface to dry fully.

Next, inspect the existing coating. If it is flaking, crazed or lifting, remove all loose material. Feather the edges so you do not print ridges through the new finish. Sound paint can stay, but it needs keying. A light abrade across the whole face gives the coating something to hold onto.

Any rust spots should be taken back to clean metal where possible. If you have exposed bare steel, prime it appropriately before topcoating. Bare patches left untreated will stand out and can fail early. On plastic or highly smooth factory finishes, an adhesion primer is often the safest route even if the surface looks clean and solid.

Mask thoroughly around brickwork, frames, handles, seals and adjacent cladding. Overspray travels further than many people think, especially outdoors. Taking ten extra minutes here is easier than cleaning dried paint off glass or paving.

Priming and paint choice

Not every garage door needs primer over the whole panel, but many do benefit from it. Bare metal, repaired areas, difficult plastics and powder-coated surfaces are the obvious examples. Primer gives uniform adhesion and helps topcoat colour settle more evenly.

Topcoat choice should follow the substrate, not habit. A door that is metal wants a metal-appropriate system. A UPVC door wants a plastic-compatible one. If your aim is a factory-style finish from an aerosol, the blend and nozzle quality matter too. A professionally mixed aerosol in the correct colour and finish gives far more control than trying to adapt a general-purpose spray to a specialist job.

Colour choice is not just about taste. Dark colours absorb more heat, which can matter on some plastic-based surfaces. That does not always make them unsuitable, but it is a factor worth checking before making a dramatic switch. Finish level matters as well. Satin tends to be forgiving and practical. Full gloss shows more surface defects but can look sharp on a well-prepared door.

How to spray for a clean, even result

The best finish comes from controlled, even passes rather than trying to cover everything fast. Shake the aerosol thoroughly, test the fan pattern on cardboard, and keep the can moving before, during and after each pass. Stopping in one spot is how runs begin.

Hold a consistent distance from the surface and overlap each pass slightly. Several lighter coats nearly always outperform one heavy coat. You get better control, fewer sags and more even flash-off. Pay attention to panel edges and pressed details, but do not flood them. Those areas are where paint builds up first.

Allow proper time between coats. If you recoat too quickly, solvents can become trapped and affect the finish. If you wait too long without following the product guidance, you may reduce intercoat adhesion. This is one of those areas where impatience costs more than extra time.

For larger doors, work in sections but keep a wet, consistent rhythm so the sheen stays even. Step back after each coat and check from more than one angle. What looks covered head-on can still be thin along the side light.

Common mistakes when repainting garage doors

The biggest mistake is treating every garage door the same. Metal, plastic and composite surfaces need different systems. After that, the usual problems are weak cleaning, not abrading glossy finishes, skipping primer on awkward substrates and spraying too heavily.

Weather causes issues too. Wind brings dust and makes spray control harder. Damp conditions can affect curing. Direct midday sun can make panels too warm, especially dark ones. If conditions are poor, waiting is usually the smarter decision.

Another common issue is colour mismatch during touch-ups. A garage door sits in a large uninterrupted area, so any variation shows. For that reason, spot repairs can be acceptable on minor damage, but full-face recoating often gives the more professional result.

How long should a repainted garage door last?

That depends on the surface, the exposure and the coating system used. A well-prepared door painted with the correct substrate-specific primer and topcoat should give years of service, not months. South-facing doors and coastal locations may weather faster. Doors that are already failing underneath will also limit how long the new finish can perform.

The practical point is this: durability starts before the first coat goes on. Good adhesion, stable substrate, correct paint chemistry and sensible application are what give repainting value.
