How to Spray Paint using an Aerosol in 10 steps

Spray painting is one of the quickest and easiest ways to refresh or restore an item. With no brushes to clean and no paint trays to deal with, aerosol paint delivers a smooth finish with minimal mess and effort.

For first-time users, it’s best to start with straightforward projects such as outdoor furniture or a kettle grill. Smaller items like flower pots or watering cans are also ideal for building confidence and technique.

Aerosol paint is designed to be easy to use, even for beginners. With the right preparation and by following the steps below, anyone can achieve a clean, professional-quality finish — even on their first attempt.

Spray Painting in 10 Easy Steps

📘 Read the Instructions

Always read the instructions on the can or via the QR code before starting.
Each product may have specific application requirements.

🧽 Sand & Prime

Lightly sand the surface if required, then wipe clean and allow it to dry.

Use filler on rough surfaces and sand smooth.
For best results, apply a suitable primer — especially on plastic.

🧼 Clean the Surface

Remove all dirt, dust, and grease using a degreaser and a lint-free cloth.
A clean surface ensures proper paint adhesion.

🔄 Shake the Can

Shake the aerosol for at least 3 minutes before use and regularly during painting.
Test the colour and spray pattern on cardboard or newspaper.

🎯 Test Spray

Spray a small, hidden area first to check colour and flow.
This helps prevent runs and uneven coverage.

🪟 Mask Surroundings

Cover any areas you don’t want to paint using tape and protective sheets.

Fine paint mist can travel, so protect nearby surfaces carefully.

📏 Check Spray Distance

Maintain the correct spray distance, typically 15–40 cm (see can label).
Start spraying off the object and move smoothly across the surface.

🔁 Adjust the Nozzle

If your spray can has an adjustable nozzle, rotate it to suit the job.
Choose vertical or horizontal spray patterns as needed.

💨 Apply Thin Coats

Apply several light coats, spraying evenly side to side.
Allow each coat to dry fully (usually 3–5 minutes) before the next.

⏱ Dry & Clean Nozzle

Allow the paint to dry fully before use.

When finished, turn the can upside down and spray to clear the nozzle.

✅ Final Tip

Remove masking tape carefully before the paint fully hardens.
Avoid touching or cleaning the surface for at least 24 hours.
