It is a question of how the item will be used, what material sits underneath and whether it can realistically be removed for finishing. Spray paint is a liquid coating supplied in an aerosol or applied with a spray gun. As the paint leaves the can, solvent evaporates and the coating dries. Spray paint gives greater flexibility when the target is a particular existing colour. It is also the better choice when future touch-ups are likely.
